Utilitarianism
an action is morally right if it results in the greatest amount of good for the
greatest amount of people affected by the action (Duignan, 2020).
Jeremy Bentham
The underlying idea is the notion of utility, which Jeremy Bentham sees as the ultimate goal in life.
John Stuart Mill
the “greatest happiness principle,” utilitarianism is the ultimate consequentialist principle.
It holds the action are in proportion as they tend to promote happines, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happines.
Types of Utilitarianism
Act utilitarianism
looks at single actions and bases the moral judgment on the amount of
pleasure and the amount of pain this single action causes.
Rule utilitarianism
looks at classes of action and asks whether the underlying principles of
action produce more pleasure than pain for society in the long run.
