Lesson Four: Elaborate - Prepare for Assessment
Lesson Outcomes: Show deep knowledge and understanding of health in Australia. Explain one health risk or disease within Australia.
Description: Class time allocated to: Discuss assessment, prepare, ask questions, research. Presentation on one leading cause of death in Australia or on Smoking or Road safety. Can create a poster, pamphlet or PowerPoint presentation. To be marked on content, method and manner (Literacy and public speaking elements).
Activity One: Engage - Introduction
Lesson Outcomes: Students to identify elements influencing their health within their home environment. Become familiar with the causes of death in Australia. Acknowledge the indigenous presence within the school and the local people.
Description: Open Discussion, Students to create individual mind maps using current knowledge of surrounding area.
Teaching Strategies:
Contextualisation - identify aspects of the learners' experience which will provide a valuable resource of basic concepts, metaphors and analogies to which the content of the curriculum can be related.
Feedback - information given to the learner about the learner's performance relative to learning goals or outcomes.
Differentiation - occurs when a teacher plans a lesson that adjusts the content being discussed, the process used to learn or the product expected from students to ensure that all students can receive the instruction and attention they need.
Inquiry Based - student centered approach where the teacher guides the students through questions, methods and data interpreted by the students.

Lesson Two: Explore - Smoking
Lesson Outcomes: Learn the contents of a cigarette and its extensive harm to the body. How this relates to health in the community.
Description: Drug Identification and the effects on community, research task.

PD4-1 - examines and evaluates strategies to manage current and future challenges
PD4-6 - recognises how contextual factors influence attitudes and behaviours and proposes strategies to enhance health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity
PD4-8 - plans for and participates in activities that encourage health and a lifetime of physical activity
PD4-9 - demonstrates self-management skills to effectively manage complex situations
Description: The task is to create an 8-10 slide PowerPoint presentation to be shown at a health conference regarding the impact of this leading cause of death in Australia. The presentation is to be colourful and engaging for the audience, consider the use of colour, animations, video and/or sound. Be mindful of overcrowding of slides.
Contexts for learning: Relationships, Safety, Personal Identity.
Strand: Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles
Criteria for assessing learning: Students will be assessed on their ability to: Use research skills to investigate a leading cause of death in Australia. Use their ICT skills to create an engaging presentation that explains the health issue and identifies actions and strategies to improve health.
Lesson Three: Explain - Leading Causes of Death
Lesson Outcomes: List ten diseases in order. Identify and describe a disease from the list and explain the extent of which it is prominent in Australia.
Description: Building on from the previous activity, students will now draw links from evidence to confidently explain the health impacts on Australia.
