Nervous System - Coggle Diagram
Nervous System
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain
Secured by 3 layers of protective membrane
(meninges)
Arachnoid(middle)
sub-arachnoid space: Contains Cerebrospinal fluid, made up of water, minerals, glucose, proteins and wastes
Functions:
Maintains constant cranial pressure
Transports nutrients and chemicals; removes waste
Protects and absorbs mechanical shock, jerk
pia mater(inner)
Dura Mater(outer)
Regions
White matter(Outer layer): axons of nerve cells
Grey matter(Inner layer): Cell Bodies, Dendrites, synapses, axon terminals
Mid-brain
Function:
Helps to control involuntary movement in head, neck, body
Helps to control pupil movement and size of eye lens
Regulation of feelings
Hindbrain
Cerebellum
Second largest part of the brain
Controls the movement of muscles
Helps in balancing and maintaining posture
Damage can lead to paralysis
Medulla Oblongota
Lowest part of the brain stem
Emerges from Foramen Magnum
Regulates respiration, circulation, heart function
Enables systole and diastole in the heart
Controls the peristalsis
Regulates secretion of hormones and digestive juices
Acts as a center for coughing, sneezing, swallowing and vomiting
Pons Varoli
Acts as relay station between medulla and rest of the body
Regulates Breathing and Respiration
Regulates chewing and swallowing
Damage can cause insomnia and problems with swallowing or chewing
Forebrain
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain
Covered by
cerebral cortex
Contains right and left hemisphere, separated by
corpus callosum
Damage cause loss of senses, memory, skill or even coma
Olfatory Lobes
Two club-shaped structure
Helps in sense of smell
Spinal Cord
Cervical nerves
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Afferent (sensory) nerves
Efferent (motor) nerves
