Reaction of Magnesium and Oxygen, Reaction of Zinc and Copper(II) Sulfate,…
Reaction of Magnesium and Oxygen
Find a small piece of Mg (s). Record its appearance.
Use tongs to hold the piece to the inner blue flame of a Bunsen burner. When lit, remove from flame and do not look into the flame. Observe and record the changes.
Balance the equation and write out
ALL
coefficients.
Identify the reaction.
Reaction of Zinc and Copper(II) Sulfate
Put 3 mL of 1 M CuSO4(aq) into a test tube. Record the appearance and the appearance of a small solid piece of Zinc.
Add Zinc to test tube and place it on a rack. Record and color changes of the solution of metal after 30 minutes.
Balance the equation and write out
ALL
coefficients.
Identify the reaction.
Reactions of Metals and Hydrochloric Acid
Obtain small pieces of Zn, Cu, and Mg. Record their appearances.
Put 3 mL of 1 M HCL(aq) in 3 separate test tubes.
Add a different metal to each tube and record observations or signs of reactions.
Balance the equations for metals that had a reaction. Write out
ALL
coefficients and write NR for no reaction.
Identify the type of reaction for the metals if detected.
Reaction of Calcium Chloride and Sodium Phosphate
Place 3 mL of 0.1 M CaCl2 and Na3PO4 (both aq) into test tubes. Record appearances.
Pour one test tube into the other and record appearances of reaction.
Balance the equation and write out all coefficients
Identify the reaction.
Reaction of Iron(III) Chloride and Potassium Thiocyanate
Place 3 mL of 0.1 M FeCl3 and 0.1 KSCN (both aq) into test tubes. Record appeacances.
Pour one test tube into the other and record appearances of reaction.`
Balance the equation and write out all coefficients
Identify the reaction.
Reaction of Sodium Carbonate and Hydrochloric Acid
Put 3 mL of 1 M HCL (aq) into a test tube. Find a small amount of Na2CO3 (s). Record appearances.
Add Na2CO3(s) to HCL test tube. Record reaction.
Light a match and insert it into the test tube. Record the flame's appearance.
Identify the reaction.
Balance and write out all coefficients.
Reaction of Hydrogen Peroxide
Place 3 mL of 3% H2O2(aq) in a test tube.
Place 3 mL of 0.1 M KI(aq) in a different tube and pour it into the H2O2 tube. Record signs of reaction.
Balance the equation and write coefficients. KI is not included because it is a catalyst.
