Shirley Jackson uses physical objects in "The Lottery" to symbolize how traditions are played out.
the black box
some towns people want to change the box
some want to keep it as is
it was already a replacement with pieces of the original made into it
So, as the box stays the same, so does the town’s tradition. However, certain characters want to get rid of the box or change it, but everyone resists—so this symbolizes the tradition having resistance against it while others defend.
the gathering of the stones
the little kids gather them in a corner at the beginning of the story
they get picked up by those same kids as the lottery is about to end
the entire town uses them to stone the person that gets the black dot.
the paper ballots instead of wood chips
the town is growing at a pretty steady rate
there are well over 300 towns people in the town
continuing to use wood chips for that many families would not be feasible with the small black box
paper is easier to manupliate and you can fit more in the box
stoning who draws the black dot
she was all for throwing stones till they were going to be thrown at her.
Jackson uses irony to portray that the lottery is fair until you are the one getting murdered.
just so happened to be tessie
the kids stone the unlucky person too
