Ricardo S. Garcia. Period 7. Muscular System
Major Functions
The Major Functions for the Muscular system is to allow for Movement of the Body, Generation of Heat, Support of Organs in the body, and finally allow for Blood circulation.
The Muscles
Thorax: Subclavius, Pectoralis Minor, Serratus Anterior, Trapezius, Scapulae, Rhomboid Minor, Deltoid, Pectoralis Major
Arms and Forearms: Teres Minor, Teres Major, Triceps Brachii, Bicep Brachii,
Abdominal: Tranversus Abdominis, Internal Oblique, External Oblique, Rectus Abdominis
Legs, Hips and Thighs: Vastus Lateralis, Vastus Intermedius, Vastus Medialus, Gluteus Maximus, Biceps Femoris, Tibialis Anterior, Extensor Digitorus Longus, Fibularis tertius, Gastocnemius, Soleus
Facial: Frontal, occipital, orbicularis, zygomaticus, buccinator, Mentalis, Platysma,
Ankle: Flexor Hallucis Longus, Extensor Hallucis Longus, Fubularius Tertius,
The Muscles and Their Functions
Skeletal muscle: Allows for attachment of bones to provide movement for the body
Smooth Muscle: Acts as a layer that covers organs like the Digestive tract.
Cardiac Muscle: Surrounds the Heart
The Neuromuscular Junction
The End Motor Neuron contains what is called Mitochondria and Synaptic Vesicles. (These store Neurotransmiters)
Muscle Fibers Hold a region called the motor End plate.
Motor end plates- contain receptors.
The Sliding Filament Theory
calcium binds to the actin structure and causes its shape to change.
The change allows for myosin heads to form bridges with actin.
The signal is sent down the membrane and into the transversive tube where its released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
Sliding of the sarcomere occur and the muscle contracts.
Signals from the brain are sent along the motor neuron. Inside the neuron are vesicles that hold neurotransmitters. (Acetycholine). Acetycholine reaches the receptors on the sarcolemma which causes impluse. (sends a signal)
Action Potential In a Muscle Fiber
Sodium Ions and an action potential occur.
Action potential occurs when a signal is sent.
