Probability Line
-
A probability of zero means that an event cannot happen. It's impossible. And a probability of one means that an event is going to happen. It's certain.
-
A probability less than 1/2 means that an event is unlikely and a probability greater than 1/2 means that an event is likely.
The more outcomes there are, the closer the probability gets to the 0 on the line.
Trial
When dealing with Probability, a Trial (or Experiment) is a process that has a random outcome. And the outcome of a trial is what happens in that particular trial.
While finding Probability, we won't know for sure what's gonna happen, because we're dealing with things that are random or unpredictable. We can only find the average.
The average here implies that the more trials you do, the closer you are to the expected probabilities.
If you add up the probabilities of all possible outcomes of a trial, the total will be 1 or 100%, because it is certain that at least one of those possibilities will happen.
Sample Question
Consider rolling a die. Each number/face is just as likely to come up as the others. Then how do we find its probability?
One way to think about it is that it's certain that one of those six sides will land facing upwards, which is a probability of 1 (or 100%). But since only one side can face upwards after a roll, we have to divide that value among all possibilities.
So we need to divide the probability up evenly between 6 possibilities. 1/6 or 0.167 or 16.7% plotted on the probability line would be the probability for a rolled die to land face up with a certain number.
