What does water do for our world?
UG: We are dependent creatures on the natural world around us but we need to reflect on our relationship dynamic with it.
EQ: How do we use and view water?
BI: Water is a resource used daily intentionally and unintentionally. Students will develop an understanding of how humans use water for industry, agriculture, and daily intake. There are multiple perspectives and values to consider when discussing the views of the water. Students will consider each of these perspectives and develop their perspective on the situation. Students will learn to develop their voice regarding the world and what they want their ecological footprint to look like.
Activities: Four corners discussion on what should be done in given circumstances, expert groups on technology and practices to improve water quality, looking into protocol in local area that is being used.
Concepts: Pollutants, runoff, domestic and industrial use of water, water improvement practices and technology, environmental concerns.
EQ: Why is water valuable?
Activities: Concept formation of percentages for water distribution, Visual representations of available water. Simulation and comparing and contrasting saltwater and freshwater composition. Co-creating criteria to determine water quality. Hypothetical case studies to determine how to save yourself stranded in the ocean. Journalling on questions posed each lessson.
BI: Individuals can get caught up in their daily lives but don't realize the bigger picture in life. They will learn the importance and availability of natural resources around them. Just because it may appear in abundance doesn't necessarily mean it's potable and able to be used by humans.
Concepts: distribution of water locally, provincially, nationally, and globally. Recognize different water sources and forms. Comparing and contrasting salt and fresh water. Factors influencing if water is considered potable. How to produce fresh water from salt water.
UG: We are egocentric beings that see the relevance of resources based on personal use rather than the impacts of the world. We need to develop a deeper understanding of how water acts in our natural system.
EQ: How does water impact our environment?
BI: Water is a powerful force that can cause erosion and deposition of sediments. The water sources around us can influence the appearance of the landscape and climates.
Concepts: Erosion, deposition, waves, tides, stream characteristics, ocean basins, continental drainage, glacial action, glaciers, icecaps, climate and water.
Activities: Compare and contrast of erosion and deposition. Simulations of river flow and glacial action. Videos of hot springs, wavess and tides. Model of stream characteristics developing water patterns. Expert groups on ocean currects affecting climate. Journalling of questions posed for each lesson.
EQ: How do species rely on water?
Activities: Class competition, Marianas trench analysis, Specific organism adaptation analysis, think-pair-share, case study analysis, Oil spill scenario debate.
Concepts: Diversity, freshwater populations, saltwater populations, adaptations, and the quality of water influencing diversity.
BI: Species rely on water to survive. They rely on the water quality which influences the diversity in the diversity of organisms. Change in water characteristics can result in adaptations in species.
