Treaty of Versailles
The Big Three ideas towards Germany
Wilson - Lenient towards Germany. He believed that Germany should be punished but at the same time wanted Germany to not be treated harshly as the Germans would someday take vengeance against them.He was also concerned of the rise of extremist groups such as the communist taking power of Germany as they did in Russia
Lloyd George - He agreed with Wilson that Germany should not be treated too harshly. He is also concerned with the rise of communist groups. He also agreed to trade with Germany meaning more jobs for Britain. However unlike Wilson, he wanted Germany to lose its colonies as its a threat to the British Empire
Clemenceau - Harsh towards Germany. The French public wanted a treaty to be harsh towards Germany in order to weaken it as much as possible .Even the French President wanted Germany to broken up into smaller States.Which Clemenceau knew that Lloyd George and wilson couldn’t agree to it
Terms of the Treaty
War Guilt - Germany has to accept the blame for causing the war
Reparations - In 1921 , Germany has to pay 6,600 million British pounds to the allies for the damage.
Territories - Germany has to give Land to the countries that have their lands stolen by the Germans .Germany was forbidden to reunite with Austria (Anschluss)
German Armed Forces - The treaty restricted the German Armed forces well below before the war.Their army was restricted to a 100,000 men with conscription banned.Germany was not allowed to have Armored Vehicles, Submarines and an Air Force. It’s Navy was restricted to about 7 warships. The Rhineland was demilitarised (meaning German armed forces aren’t allowed to enter the area)
League of Nations - Germany was not allowed into the League until its a peace and loving country
Was The treaty fair ?
Fair
Many people felt that the Germans were themselves operating standard.Their call for a fairer treatment did not square to with the harsh way they treated Russia in the Brest and Litvosk treaty in 1918
Other states had raised taxes to pay for the war.Kaiser’s government hadn’t done this.It had simply allowed debts to mount up as it had planned to pay Germany’s war debts by extracting reparations from defeated states.
Unfair
peacemaker s we’re blind and selfish resulting, the produce of a disastrous treaty that could cause another war
Anger towards the Treaty
Warguilt - Germans did not feel that they had started the war. They also felt at the very least , the blame to be shared
German territories - a major blow to German pride and its economy. Both SAAR land and upper Silesia were important industrial areas
Reparations - the Germans were furious that they are expected to pay for all the damage they caused by the war even though their economy is severely weakened
Disarmament - Germans felt these terms were unfair. An army of 100,000 was very small for a country of Germany’s size and their army was their pride despite Wilson’s 14 points calling for disarmament
The fourteen points and the League of Nations - To most Germans the treatment wasn’t keeping up to Wilson’s 14 points. An example while self determination was given to the Baltic States, German people were hived to other countries run by non Germans. The Anschluss was also banned
