Forebrain, Outer layer of cerebrum (grey matter)
Covers the cerebral…
Forebrain
Limbic System
-
Hypothalamus
- Regulates survival needs
- Thirst, hunger, sleeping, body temp
- And emotions
- control pituitary gland hormones
Cingulate Cortex
- Limbic structure found in cortex
- Influences emotional & cognitive
Thalamus
- Brain's sensory control center
- Rcvs info from all senses (except smell) & sends it to brain regions responsible
Amygdala
- Arousal & regulation of emotion
- Initial response to sensory info (fear)
Cerebrum
Cerebral Hemispheres
- 2 halves (L&R) of the cerebrum
- Both hemis are connected by & communicates via corpus callosum
- Cross field coordination: R hemi controls L body
- Lateralization: specialization of each hemi in particular operations
- Left: logical, sequential, step by step
- Right: holistic activities
- In most mental activities, both sides cooperate
Cerebral Cortex
Temporal Lobes
- For hearing
- primary auditory cortex
- auditory association cortex
- Wernicke's area for comprehension of speech
Parietal Lobes
- Rcvs sensory input for touch & body position
- Somatosensory cortex
Frontal Lobes
- Complex decision making, planning, memory
- Personality & social judgement
- Includes motor cortex
- Includes Broca's area for speech production
Occipital Lobes
- Rcvs visual info
- primary visual cortex
- visual association cortex
- Located at back of brain
- Outer layer of cerebrum (grey matter)
- Covers the cerebral hemis responsible for higher mental functions
