GENDER EQUALITY
"Wives, submit to your husbands... for the husband is the head of the wife" Ephesians 5:22
-
Catholics believe that only men can lead worship and because God describes Eve as a 'helper' in Genesis, women can perform serving roles such as looking after children.
Jesus' disciples were all men too, so this is another excuse as to why women cannot be bishops or priests
-
SAME SEX RELATIONSHIPS
In the Old Testament, God commands "If a man has sexual relations with man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death."
In the New Testament, Jesus never mentions the issue but an early Christian is recorded saying that "those practising homosexuality" are contradicting "wholesome teaching"
Pope Francis has said that same sex couples should be treated kindly but the Catholic Church does not allow same sex marriage
The United Reformed Church is one of the few denominations of Christianity that allows gay marriage.
The Church of England believes that marriage is a "Solemn, public and life-long covenant between a man and a woman"
Generally speaking, ISLAM doesn't tolerate homosexuality (but individual Muslims may have differing opinions and beliefs)
This is because there are passages in the Qur'an which argue that it is unnatural and against the will of Allah.
"And as for the two of you men who are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. And if they repent and improve, then let them be. Lo! Allah is Merciful."
Some Islamic States condemn homosexuals with the death penalty, but in some safer countries, especially the UK there are LGBTQ+ muslims who are protected by European anti-discrimination laws
DIVORCE
-
- "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery" Jesus in Book of Luke
- "Anyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman, commits adultery." Jesus in Book of Matthew
-
-
Although there will always be differing opinions, most Muslims agree that divorce is acceptable if a marriage has broken down, and generally Muslims are allowed to get re-married
-
CATHOLIC ANNULMENT
Annulment is the process within the Catholic Church whereby the Church "can declare the nullity of a marriage" which basically means the marriage never existed
Certain criteria have to be met, such as finding out someone was already married, or if one person was not able to consent to the marriage
WEDDINGS
At a Christian wedding the bride and groom will swear to God and to the general Christian community to remain faithful and loving to one another "until death do us part"
Marriage is a sacrament in the Catholic Church and so a priest is essential to perform the ritual --> Covennant is the centerpice of the cermony
Rings are usually exchanged to show eternal love and a passage of the Bible is read. Rings are also a physical reminder of your vows and love
Catholic ceremony: A covenenat (promise) is made - this covenant is similar to the one God makes with humans --> this is very powerful for a religiuos person
