Overall
Lennie in this scene is portrayed as a naive and aghast character.
He felt that he had dragged George into water by injuring Curley very horribly. They may lose their job.
I feel sympathetic for Lennie as he had serious injuries and he could be blamed for self-defence. As I know he is a very benevolent character and he will never do something violent to someone without a serious reason. In this case, it's just his naive personality that pushed him to take the action.
