Module 6: Devising an assessment plan
Key concepts in language testing and assessment
Key concepts
Assessment: on-going process to collect information about L2 performance
Test
Classification scheme - qualitative
Numerical scales (a process called Measurement) - quantitative
Non-test
Evaluation - the process of making a value judgement about the worth of students' products or performance
Assessment Methods
selected response
constructed response
personal response
Selecting assessing contents
All selected contents must be:
Relevant to what students have learnt in a particular language course;
Representative of what they have learnt in that course.
Score weights for each assessing content should be proportional to the importance level that the course attaches to this content.
Selecting suitable performance levels
Set a suitable performance level, which allows the plausibility of designing a test in specific conditions
Selecting useful assessment methods
Based on selected contents and performance levels
Three alternatives:
selected response,
constructed response,
personal response
Need to be checked
reliability
authenticity
interactiveness
praticality
validity
washback effects
Key components in a course goal
target content (the target language knowledge or skill that the course aims to develop for learners)
performance level (the cognitive level at which learners are expected to perform the knowledge/ skill)
condition for learning and/ or assessing that knowledge/ skill
