WORD ATTACK / DECODING SKILLS
DEFINITION
Srategies are ways that help students decode, pronounce, and understand unfamiliar or tricky words.
Include the ability to recognize the basic sounds and sound blends, called phonemes, that make up a word and

STEPS TO DECODE A WORD
Examine part of the word if it looks like a word we already know
Use clues in the rest of the sentence
Split word into smaller part (chunks)
Think about the subject of what we are reading
Sound out each letter sounds

Ask students to look at the pictures to find any clues
Ask students to say the first sound of the word
Let students stretch out each sound slowly then put back all the sound together
Ask the students to look for part in the word (chunk)
Let the students think about the meaning of the story
Let the students only say the first word and read the whole sentence, before rereading the sentences
