Parental engagement
Children who have parents/carers who spend time talking/playing with them are more likely to be faster to develop language and communication skills
Level of parental engagement can depend on:
- the strength of attachment
- the energy levels/knowledge of parents/carers
Some parents/carers don't have time to talk/play with their children as they may be too busy working or have other children to deal with
If a child's parents/carers are involved with their child's learning then the child will be more likely to engage more at school and have a more positive attitude towards school so they will learn more and socialise with others as they will be more confident and so their communication will improve
Stimulation
Toys and resources are needed to provide good stimulation for children and babies - adults find it easier to interact/play with children when there is something physical to play with
-
Children are more likely to start a conversation if they have seen or are doing something that interests them
Bilingualism/EAL
Some children may be learning more than one language. for example if their parents/carers speak Spanish at home and then they have to go to school and learn English
Some children will find this easy and there will be no delay as they will associate each language with that person/situation
Other children may find this a bit difficult and may start speaking the wrong language at the wrong situation and this will affect their communication with other children and adults
