Signs of a Struggling Student
Behavioral Issues
Inappropriate Behavior in Class
Yelling, fighting, bullying,or disrespect?
Differentiate to determine what style of teaching will ease this behavior and help develop focus
Not effective?
Consult with the school counselor to help determine the reasons for behavior and construct a plan to assist in healthy classroom behavior.
Depressed
Is the student sad, apathetic, tired, lethargic, or lonely?
Parents available?
Yes?
Consult with parents and find constructive ways to approach the issue. (eg. creative outlets, Therapy, Medication, or exercise.)
Maintain contact with parents to update and inform on the students condition. Report any lapses or worsening signs.
No?
Consult school counselor and help assess the severity of the symptoms.
Continue to monitor and be a source of support
Use resources available at school to assist in the improvement of the students emotional well-being. (eg. after school programs)
Academic Issues
Falling Behind
Determine the starting point of the decline and discuss the possible roadblocks are there.
Find the blocks and remove them. (eg. differentiation, tutoring, personalized curriculum, or emotional support.)
Continue to monitor to avoid possible relapse
Struggles with Subject Material
Assess the weak points and what the student understands well and doesn't understand.
Develop a personalized curriculum that gives the student the opportunity to develop confidence and understanding without falling behind.
Continue to monitor and support
Familial Issues
Neglect
Assess the students physical and mental state.
Poor hygiene, improper clothing for season, or emotionally withdrawn?
Consult school counselor.
Treat student with patience, understanding, and emotional warmth.
Be available and approachable
Abuse
Assess the students physical and mental state.
Bruises, burns, or cuts?
Discuss with other teachers and confirm abuse is likely.
Determine safety of child and devise a plan to ensure safety of student. (eg.Child services)

Special Needs Issues
Cognitive Limitations
Does the student show signs of learning disabilities? (eg. Dyslexia or ADHD)
Yes?
Assess the level up help needed.
If severe consult parents and work out a plan.
Mild symptoms use Differentiation to cope with behavior
Moderate consult the school counselor for advice.
Physical Limitations
Assess the level of assistance that is required.
Severe
Accommodate with special seating and Assistive technologies. (eg. text to speech)
Keep in contact with parents to help stay informed on conditions.
Educate on specific limitations to better understand how you can help as an educator.
Moderate
Make sure that the class is easily accessible and allows for adaptation for seating requirements.
