Types of bones
long bones
- are greater in length than in width (ex:arm and leg bones)
short bones
- almost equal in width and length (ex: wrist and ankle bones)
flat bones
- have broad surface and plate like shape(ex:ribs, skull, and scaplua)
irregular bones
- varied shapes (when doesn't fit in other category its irregular ex: vertebrae and some facial bones)
Sesamoid bones
-small round bones that are not attached to any other bone (ex:patella (knee cap))
Anatomy of the long bone
periosteum
-tough layer of dense connective tissue that covers the bone
compact bone
- very tightly packed tissue
Spongy bone
-many branching bony plates called trabeculae (actually looks like spongy)
Yellow marrow
- stores fat and fills most cavities of bone in adults
Red marrow
-fills the spongy bone of the skull, ribs, sternum, clavicles, vertebrae, and pelvis in adults. makes red blood cells, white blood cells, & platelets.
Bone remodeling
Joints
synarthrotic
- Immovable
Amphiarthrotic
-Slightly movable
Diarthrotic
-Freely movable
Fibrous
-made of dense connective tissue
Cartilaginous
-made of cartilage
Synovia
l-having a complex structure
Movements allowed by Synovial Joints
they can move away and closer
Disorders
Differences between male and female skeleton
female hips are shorter and wider and more oval
male hips are taller and thicker and stronger
