Ancient Measurement Systems
Cubit: The distance from the Elbow to the tip of the Middle Finger
Hand: The width of the Palm. Measurement in Hands is still used today to measure the height of horses
The Foot: The Length of a Human Foot. 1 Foot is divided into 12 inches
Miles belong to the Imperial (British) system of measurement
Imperial System
12 Lines = 1 Inch
12 Inches = 1 Foot
3 Feet = 1 Yard
1760 Yards = 1 Mile
A Measurement system needs to be reliable, precise and accurate, so that under any circumstances, the result will be the same
During the French Revolution, Revolutionaries introduced new systems of measurement that were based on 10,100, and 1000
Length (Meter): The Length of a path travelled by light in a Vacuum in 1/300 millionth of a second
Mass (Kilogram): The Mass of the International prototype of the Kilogram
Time (Seconds): The Duration of 9 Billion periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between two hyperfine levels of the ground state Caesium-133 Atom
