Deaf Identities Intersectionality
Race/ Ethnicity
Different locations
Depending on where someone may be, how different parts of their identity may show more
At work, a Deaf identity may present more
With people of a different and hearing race, racial identity may become more prevalent
When it develops
If a child is part of a Deaf family, they will develop racial and Deaf identities around the same time
The child will begin to see and realize that there is a difference between them and their parents, and develop an identity
When race intersects a deaf identity, a person may identify with one more than the other or with both equally
Sexual Orientation
Acceptance
Coming out is hard even for people not already of a minority
If someone of a minority (deaf) accepts their LGBTQA+ status, this may make coming out much more difficult
With more people who accept them ad give them a chance to be their selves, coming out can be made easier
Support
Parental and familial support may be affected by religious beliefs
If there is no support for a Deaf person coming out as LGBTQA+, they may postpone or even refuse to come out
With support, finding a home in both communities can be made possible and even more fun
When they Develop
Sexual orientation develops later in life
Other identities usually develop faster
Coming to terms with LGBTQA+ status can be affected by support and race and religious beliefs
Disability
Acceptance and Support
Familial
When families are not forthcoming with information about a child's disabilities, it can be really difficult to come to terms with them when they find out
When a family does tell their child everything as soon as possible, the child can prepare for those outcomes
With not being told about a condition they have, a child will eventually learn and in turn develop a distrust and longing for how things used to be
Social Acceptance
Having family and friends and people who accept them can be really beneficial to living with multiple minority groups
Unfortunately, many social views are very negative to those of minority groups
With no strong social opportunities, accepting oneself can be extremely hard
Dealing with intersectionality
Depending on the different scenarios, dealing with the different minority groups one is a part of can be extremely difficult
If someone has always known who they are and has rooted their life in that identity will be better equipped to deal with their issues.
If someone is blindsided by an illness or lied to it can completely leave them in a struggle to get the resources they need
Coming to terms
If someone is able to know about all of their differences as they grow, they will come to terms with how to deal with them much sooner
