Types of Deaf Identities
Deaf as a core identity-"Deaf"
Uses sign language primarily
proud of being Deaf
live a Deaf way of life
Deaf not as a core identity-"deaf"
choose to live closer to a hearing life
chose spoken language (not all the time)
Often wish to associate with hearing people
Identity Process
Deaf adults can have a difficult time accepting/finding their identity
one general framework of how the acceptance process can be
Taken-for-Granted phase
feel like and identify with hearing people
Alientation phase
hearing people don't understand/fully accept them, or they don't fully accept hearing people
Affiliation phase
start to connect with deaf people
Deaf/Deaf-in-my-own-way identity
AKA acceptance of their identity
