Chapter 6: Deaf Identity
Acculturation Domains:
- Cultural Preferences: Do you prefer to be with Deaf or hearing people?
- Language Competence: How well do you understand signed language? How well do you understand spoken language?
- Cultural Involvement: How involved are you with Deaf cultural activities? How involved are you in hearing cultural activities?
- Cultural Knowledge: How well do you know Deaf and hearing culture? For example, popular Deaf jokes and play on signs vs. hearing nursery rhymes and inside jokes?
- Cultural Identification: Are you most comfortable with hearing or deaf people?
Levels of Identity:
Group Level: Age, disability/ability, culture, race, sexual orientation, etc.
Individual Level: Experiences that are unique to you, genetics
Universal Level: Being a human, biological similarities, being able to use symbols, common life experiences
Theory of Deaf Identity:
Stage 2, Marginal: They find it difficult to connect to people in the hearing world. Cannot find a connection in either hearing nor deaf communities
Stage 3, Immersion: They find comfort in Deaf culture and believe that it is very much better than hearing culture. They immerse themselves completely in Deaf culture.
Stage 1, Culturally Hearing: Believe being deaf is a medical problem that needs to be fixed, associate with hearing people and hearing culture
Stage 4, Bicultural: They have bad experiences in both cultures and have a balanced perspective of both hearing and deaf communities.
