The Gilded Age and Immigration
The Gilded Age
Occurred in the late 19th century
Lasted for about 30 years
Period of rapid economic growth
Expanded the US economy into new areas (heavy industries, railroad and coal mining...)
Who benefited the most?
Gilded Age: lead to unequal distribution of wealth
The wealthiest (2%) owned more than one third on nation's wealth.
The rich only got richer and the poor only got poorer (disparity)
Industrial revolution: development of technology -> better quality of life
Immigration
How did immigration start?
Industrialization in the US
Wage workers outnumbered independent workers
A lot of job availability (more factories)
discrimination and darker complexion in home countries
Push factor
Poverty & lack of financial mobility at home countries.
Persecution and discrimination at home was another factor (Russian government took an intolerant position towards Jews)
Farmers were heavily affected by mechanization of agriculture. -> left their farms and headed for industrial jobs
Due to the Jim Crow laws in the South: African Americans moved toward the North for better life and opportunities for new jobs.
Pull factor
Cities developed as industrial hubs.
They had communities of support, people with the same background (same language, the same food,…)
The effects of immigration
