Composites - Coggle Diagram
Composites
Carbon fibre
layers of carbon weave mixed with resin
used for sport equipment - tennis rackets, fishing rods, luxury cars / F1
they are flexible and light
very high strength to weight ratio
very expensive & time consuming to do
Composites are a mixture of 2 or more materials
used to produce new materials with superior qualities - stronger, lighter, more resistant to rust, etc
Fibreglass
Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP)
glass fibres come in a roll/weave
polyester resin (thermoset) is added onto a mould
used for canoes / motorbike tarring
good strength to weight ratio
range of colours
Kevlar
fabric - can be worn
polymer fabric - combined with resin
very strong - 5x stronger than steel - very light
used for body armour
reinforced concrete
mixture of steel bar and concrete
concrete had low tensile strength but steel bar has high
Concrete, however, it strong in compression
