MICROBIOLOGY II
Laryngitis
-
-
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
-
scratchy or raw throat, especially when you try to speak or swallow
-
-
Laryngoscopy
-During a laryngoscopy, your doctor sticks a thin, flexible tube with a microscopic camera through your mouth or nose. Your doctor then looks for the following signs of laryngitis:
POSSIBLE MICROORGANISM
-Corynebacterium diphtheriae, an aerobic gram-positive rod that may infect only the larynx or may represent an extension of nasopharyngeal infection.
-Chlamydia pneumoniae.
-Mycoplasma pneumoniae
-S aureus.
Sinusitis
It can cause them to get blocked and filled with fluid. It is usually caused by cold or allergies. An infection could result from the blockage.
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
-
Facial pressure (particularly around the nose, eyes, and forehead), headache and or pain in your teeth or ears.

BACTERIA
Moraxella catarrhalis
-
LAB DIAGNOSIS
identified using Gram stain, catalase, and optochin tests
MORPHOLOGY
Usually, they are seen as pairs of cocci (diplococci), but they may also occur singly and in short chains.
-
-
PATHOGENESIS
This pathogen colonizes the nasopharynx of its host asymptomatically, but overtime can migrate to sterile tissues and organs and cause infections.
Pharyngitis
Divided into 2 classification
- acute pharyngitis
- chronic pharyngitis
WHAT IS PHARYNGITIS?
- sore throat
- discomfort and pain when swallowing
- dry throat
BACTERIA
Streptococcus pyogenes
-
LAB DIAGNOSIS
- Throat culture
- Rapid antigen detection test (RADT)
-
MORPHOLOGY
- Gram positive
- spherical
- facultative anaerobic bacterium
-
TREATMENT
- Rest
- Oral fluid
- Salt water gargling
- Antibiotics (Penicillin or amoxicillin)
Epiglottitis
What is Epiglottitis?
a small, movable "lid" just above the larynx that prevents food and drink from entering your windpipe.
