Modelling
Motion capture
definition
It is the recording of human and animal movement through various means such as video, magnetic or electro-mechanical devices.
Markers (acoustic, inertial LED, magnetic, reflective) are placed on each joint of the individual which are tracked through sensors to create a digital representation of the motions.
examples
In the game "Until Dawn," the characters movements and facial expressions were developed through motion capture.
In most Marvel movies, motion capture is used in order to animate the movement of bigger and bulkier characters.
-
Haptic technology
definition
Technology that interfaces the user via sense of touch. It works by using mechanical actuators that apply forces to the user (such as sound waves), thus simulating physics of the virtual world in real time. It allows an individual to interact with the computer simulation.

-
Virtual reality (VR)
definition
The use of computer technology to create a simulated experience that can be either similar or different to the real world. Virtual reality systems: VR headsets, multi projected environments
Virtual reality allows an individual to immerse themselves in a 3D environment. It replaces the individual's real world environment.

Augmented reality (AR)
definition
Interactive experience of a real world environment though computer enhancement of a given object in the real world. It is a system that combines the real and virtual world in real time and accurate 3D registration of virtual and real objects. It alters the perception of the real world.
examples
Interactive architecture models that through digital screens provide a more detailed structure of the building.
The game "Pokemon GO" used AR to display the pokemons in the phone screen as if they were interacting with the real world
-
Animation
definition
Consists in the link of graphic screens together in order to simulate motion or process. It can be made with either 2D or 3D elements.
examples
Animation in movies: Frozen, original Cinderella from Disney, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, etc.
Animation in video games: Gris, Hollow Knight, The Legend of Zelda series, Cuphead, etc.
-
FEA
Definition
Short for Finite Element Analysis. Involves the simulation of unknown factors (mainly physics) through CAD systems.
examples
Car crash simulation in order to tell were will the force of the impact reside and how will the car react.
Test wether a bridge will be able to hold the weight of objects passing by, or how resilient it will be to natural disasters.

What applications can you find to ATLAS, the robot designed by Boston Dynamics?
ATLAS may be very useful for exploration of dangerous terrain, for example, an area polluted by nuclear energy, or space exploration, thanks to its high mobility and non-organic nature. It may also work as a replacement for stunt doubles or to perform dangerous actions that would otherwise be very risky for humans.
