Rich Learning Task: "Belonging, Being & Becoming" in HSIE
HISTORY
Outcomes:
HT1-1: Communicates an understanding of change and continuity in family life using appropriate historical terms.
HT1-2: identifies and describes significant people, events, places and sites in the local community over time.
Rationale: Students explore the history of their local area, examining the remains of the past and why they should be preserved. They develop an understanding of belonging through the change and continuity in family life. Students learn about the importance of their own history and their families.

RESOURCES
'Home' (also known as Belonging) by Jeannie Baker
'Home' a resource which can be used to assist students understand the change and continuity in family life as well as urban environments.
'Home' by Jeannie Baker is a picture book. It has very few words, with a couple of paragraphs on the inside sleeves and a few paragraphs on the last page. The story in this picture book is told through the mixed media illustrations of a window frame out of a girl's bedroom window, the view she sees out of it and how that changes over time.
Pixar SparkShorts 'Purl'
'Purl' is a resource which can be used to assist the teacher in beginning an open class discussion regarding belonging.
'Purl' is a short film part of Pixar's SparkShorts program, and focuses on a ball of yarn named Purl, who gets employed in a male-dominant company, which causes her to be ignored by her fellow employees.
'Home' by Carson Ellis
'Home' is a resource which can be used to assist students in gaining an understanding of belonging in the places they live.
'Home' by Carson Ellis is a gorgeous, imaginative picture book celebrating the many possibilities of home.
'I'm Australian Too' by Mem Fox
'I'm Australian Too' is a resource which can be used to assist students with interacting and empathising with others and recognising that people use different languages to communicate.
'I'm Australian Too' by Mem Fox is a picture book about how all of our lives are enriched by the vibrant cultural diversity immigrants bring to their new communities.
GEOGRAPHY
Outcomes:
GE1-1: Describes features of places and the connections people have with places.
GE1-2: Identifies ways in which people interact with and care for places.
Rationale: Students explore the places they live in and belong to. They develop an understanding of what makes a place special and how this may differ for different people. Students learn about the importance of looking after places.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
History
Learning Activity 1: Students view the short film 'Purl'. Students participate in an open class discussion regarding belonging. The teacher asks students what does it mean to belong and where do you belong? E.g. family, school, friends, sport etc.
The teacher reads 'Home' by Jeannie Baker to the class. Students are asked about belonging in 'Home'. Where does Tracy belong? In her home? With her friends? With her family?
Students are given a template with different sized circles. They use the template to draw images of themselves, their immediate family, their extended family, their house and their community (starting from smallest to biggest).
Learning Activity 2: The teacher reads 'Home' by Jeannie Baker. Students use their prior knowledge from 'Learning Activity 1' to further develop their understanding of belonging.
Students are provided with images representing Tracy's age and are asked to cut them out and glue them in the correct sequence.
Students were asked to bring in photos of their childhood with the ages written on them. Students will sequence them to create a timeline.
Geography
Learning Activity 3: Students go into the school playground and observe the different homes near the school. The teacher takes photographs and the students record observations in small groups.
Students have brought in a photograph of their own home to compare to the different homes nears the school once the class have returned to the classroom.
