He decides to leave NY, hitchhike west and never come back. He informs Phoebe that they will meet at the Musuem so that he can lend her money back
Phoebe finally arrives but with her suitcases begging him to take her with him. She gets angry when Holden refuses and won't go back to school

Holden convinces Phoebe to ride the carousel and he feels extremely happy while watcing her go around and around
He concludes his story by saying that he went home after the day in the park, got sick and was sent to the rest home, the place he writes his story from
He will go to a new school next fall but he doesn't feel like talking about it. He regrets talking too much about his experiences since it makes him miss all the people in his story
