Moral panics
Is an irrational fear (often unfounded) that someone / thing is threatening the values and safety of society.
London riots 2011 : People convicted of theft were more likely be given Custodial Sentences that similar cases under 'normal circumstances'
Mods and rockers (1960) : More severe sentences during this time of moral panic.

Homicide
Diminished responsibility - if there's evidence that a defendant's mental condition reduces their ability to be rational / understand their actions.

Automatism - Defendant must have consciously chosen to commit the crime. If the defence shows the act was involuntary they can plead automatism.
