ETHNIC–RACIAL IDENTITY CHANGE PROCESS, Cultural–Ethnic Identity…
ETHNIC–RACIAL IDENTITY
CHANGE PROCESS
According to Berry (1994, 2004), immigrants who identify strongly with ethnic traditions and values and weakly with the values of the dominant culture subscribe to the traditionally based or ethnic oriented identity option.
Multiracial and Biracial Identity
individuals who are identifying themselves as multiracial, instead of choosing one ethnicity.
Compartmentalization
refers to how one social identity category serves as the primary basis of identification in a particular setting and a gear shift occurs to another primary identity persona in a different context
merger means the awareness of crosscutting social identity memberships in selves and recognizing multiple groups as significant others who share some aspects of this complex, social identity self
we may want to analyze immigrants’ acculturation process from multiple levels: cognitive, affective, and behavioral, plus self-identification and other-identification perspectives in diverse macro- and micro situational settings (Y.Y. Kim, 2009).
INTERCULTURAL REALITY CHECK:
DO-ABLES

Mindful listening
: pay thoughtful attention to both the verbal and the nonverbal messages of the speaker before responding.
Identity validation skills
: When a person perceives authentic and positive identity validation, he or she will tend to view self-images positively. When a person perceives identity rejection, he or she will tend to view self-images negatively.
