Chapter 3: Individual Differences in SLL
There are difficulties determining how individual characteristics contribute to SLA
Everyone has a different way to measuring language proficiency.
Correlation Research: Not cause and effect
Positive and Negative Correlation
Negative Correlation
AGE! There is never a "correct" age to learn another language but there is some research that show that younger students have a less difficult time learning another language than adults.
Postive Correlation
Motivation! Some successful students may be motivated but there is no research that shows that unsuccessful students are unmotivated.
It's not possible to measure motivation and personality!
Learning Characteristics
Personality
There is no correlation between student's personality and their success on L2 learning.
Communication
Anxiety: Not "bad"
Motivation and Attitude
Specific reward that makes student want to do something. Can be internal or external.
MOTIVATION IS SUPER IMPORTANT! but there is no data that measures student's motivation level or if motivation is the cause of successfulness.
There are several ways to motivate students in the classroom. These motivation can be internal or external.
Learning Style
Different ways that students learn.
Meeting the student's needs by designing a lesson based on their learning style helps them become more successful learners.
Identity
Power Relationship: Majority vs. Minority language learners
Make student's feel safe and comfortable about their identity!
Intelligence and Aptitude
How fast or slow students learn new content.
Working memory is important.
Success of L2 depends.
Age
Children ELs are typically more successful than Adult ELs.
But difficult to compare because you need to take in consideration of more than just age between child and adult
Learner Beliefs
Learners may have beliefs about how they should be taught.
as a teacher it's good to explore these beliefs and even try them to see if it helps ours students.
