Types of Schools
Homeschooling
parents choose, file with a superintendent normally, no one really checks
Virtual Schooling
you can go on site with others doing virtual school or do it from home, more common recently, a lot of lectures are videos online
Private Schools
do not have to teach the MO learning standards, usually have to pay for schooling
Vouchers
not in Missouri, students can go to different districts and their money follows them, funnels money out of schools that are low performing
Charter Schools
public school but independently ran, boarding school, different hours, alternative methods
Magnet Schools
Selective acceptance but still public, special curricula, arts buildings
Public Schools
Individuals with Disabilities Act: free and appropriate education for everyone
1) Individual education Program (IEP)
2) Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
3) Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
4) Appropriate Evaluations (counselor)
5) Parent and Teacher Participation
6) Procedural Safeguards
Types of Culture
Whose Cultural Values?: when mixing cultures what trumps what, discrimination, holidays, language (How do you value the human even if you disagree with their beliefs?)
School Culture: reflects the community traditions, bring your tractor to school day
Culture of Families: trumps everything else, must keep in mind what families do or think
Culture of Partnering with Community: helping with grants, watch dogs, care to learn
Common Culture: shared values, traditions, experiences. Examples: free public education, right to a job, vacations
Building Classroom Culture: make it energized and empowered, make experiences like "today you are a reporter", live or model the expectations
Microroles
Social Development: respect authority, respect others differences, emotional stability
Academic Achievement: teaching content, educational
Workforce Readiness: professionalism, oral/written skills, team skill set, critical thinking
Citizenship: current events classroom instructions, service learning, school gov.
Cultural Transmission: things that happen in the U.S. that we do not think about but other countries don't do those things
