- - - - The oppressor, addressed throughout as “you,” is full of “bitter, twisted lies” and “hatefulness” toward the speaker, and hopes to see the speaker “broken” in both body and spirit. However, despite all the methods of the oppressor to “shoot,” “cut,” or “kill” her, the speaker remains defiant by continuing to “rise” in triumph.
    - - Through all the oppression the African American community has been through, like dust, free flowing, they rise and fly free, not held down by anything.
  - - - Yet the speaker responds to this treatment not only by surviving, but by thriving—something that provokes anger from her oppressor. The speaker wonders why the oppressor is so “upset,” “offended,” and “gloomy.”
        
        Perhaps it is because of her confident “walk,” generous “laugh,” or dazzling “dance.” The poets joy, her refusal to bend down, abide by her oppressor is its own act of defiance. She displays signs of wealth in the form of “oil,” “gold,” and “diamonds.
        
        Maya assigns value to her body and grants it power and beauty regardless of what society says. The placement of the diamonds refers to the speaker’s womanhood and the lines glorify the speaker’s body, show the power in femininity as a black woman. she is a "black ocean," a vast, powerful, and unstoppable figure.

- - - - The drawing is about the burden of racism that our country unfairly puts on black citizens, a burden that she, a white person, does not have to carry, but should.
      - It shows four African American people, two men and two women, carrying the weight of the word race.
      - The word race is magnified in comparison to the four people. The drawing is made against a white background, as is the commonality in all of Liza’s political cartoons. Because of this, Liza focuses on the big picture, the cartoon as a whole.
      - The four people look tired, with their hands hanging, as if they have given into the burden their race holds.
