COPD:
What is COPD?
- An umbrella term that encompasses 3 main disease subgroups - emphysema, bronchiolitis and bronchitis
Differences between Asthma & COPD
- Asthma is reversible; COPD is not
- COPD has a structural basis
Differences between normal lung and COPD lung:
- Loss of elastin in COPD lung -> Due to the loss of Elastin fibres -> it cannot keep the small airway open -> Leads to the colapse of airways -> As tiny bronchioles are loss -> Tiny vessels that travel with it is also lost -> Hyperinflated Lungs
Treatments of COPD
- Bronchodilators:
- Anti-muscarinics -> Relaxes Smooth Muscles
- Beta-agonist -> Prevent the release cholinergics
- Steroids:
- Have limitations: ppl treated with steroids have fewer episodes of symptoms but they are also prone to serious pneumonias
