American Sign Language changes over time
American Sign LAnguage history shows continuous changes in signs
In earlier times like the 1800's for ASL many signs were made on the waist or lower chest
some of the older signs were more picturesque in bodily action as well as more gestural to show words involving action or action in general
More recently sign languages is predominately in the upper chest or neck regions
Researches suggest that the continuous change in signs occurs because of what they term as high visual activity
Some changes in ASL are subtle but with great purpose and seemingly intresting
American sign language and the process "Historical change"
Older forms of sign language may simply disappear due to thee passing of the signers, this process is called historical change
Old signs and new signs may coexist for a while but soon the old signs simply disappear
Most changes of old signs are made with parameters. Usually handshape or location of the sign.
Old signs were not more complex but did not have as much meaning, fr example the sign Last has shifted from using the index finger to the LAST finger the pinky
How American sign Language changes throughout time
Generational Gaps, Those before school would learn american sign language differently than those who got the first chance to learn in schools
Deaf children who received an education would bring home different signs to their deaf families than what they knew
New generations shift the positions of signs and usually stick to what the majority now know instead of what the older generation learned
American Sign Language ironically is derived from european signers who came to the united states
Artificial sign communication system
Since rapid expanding number of single classrooms for deaf pupils in "normal" school settings during the late 1960's attempts in providing different sign system proliferated
Many different systems were further propelled by public law
Many new sign communication involved no past know forms of sign which clearly can be difficult for some already accustoms to a sign communication system
The five different artificial sign communication systems we know are Seeing essential English, Signing Essential English, Linguistics of Visual English, Pidgin Signed English, and Signed English
Only artificial sign communication system developed by a woman was Signing Exact English
