"Counting Americans" Ch. 13
censuses prior to 1850 did not provide data on the which countries foreign citizens were immigrating from
1820 census seperated the population between those who were "foreigners not naturalized" and the rest of the population
In 1830, the census included the same type of question, but changed the term to "aliens"
the 1840 census got rid of the question all together
1850 census was "for the first time [asking] about the place of birth of each resident" pg. 138
1860 census followed suit of 1850 questions
asked for the state, territory, or ocuntry the resident was born in
this data was then used to put together data on poeple born in and outside of the US
also used to look at migration patterns within the US
wanted to figure out who was born outside of the US reguardless of if they had gotten US citizenship
data from the 1850 census showed the US had huge numbers of immigrants
before this point the outlook for the nation in terms of growth focused on the birth rates of the already present populations; after the 1850 & 1860 census, the focus turned to looking at the amount of immigration as growing the country
looking at different immigrant populations to see which seemed the healthiest, had the best or worst characteristics, who was desirable, etc
American population seen as made of three categories: whites from the US, blacks, and immigrants
want to see what the influx of immigrants will do to change the make up of the native population over time
more exclusionary practices for anyone that fits into a category other than white native born American
all of the data on different countries of origins for immigrants led to ethnic statistics
data is treated differently from the 1850 census to the 1860 census because of the introduction to ethnic stats
looked at cultural and biological heritage
fear of being overrun by immigrants AKA "race suicide"
white native American population is afraid to lose their majority and power over US politics if they get overrun by immigrants
comparisons of people from different birth countries
using these new ethnic identities to again start ranking types of people and categorizing them
looking at levels of disease, insanity, and other undesirable traits
changes were made to how a person qualified as born in another country and subcategories for types of immigrants were created
1870 wanted to know where the parents of each resident were born similar to the subcalsses of blacks and mulattoes based on percentages of black blood
1900 to be classified as born in Poland you had to speak the native language
1860-1890 included options to identify as from Poland even though it was no longer a country
