Anthony Munoz period Skeletal system
Types of bones
short bone
cubed shaped bones, examples are the wrists and ankles.
flat bones
thin and flat usually curved, example include the skull, ribs, and scapulae.
Long bone
Longer than they are wide, example are humerus and femurs, bones of the limbs.
irregular bone
Complicated bone that does not fall into the other categories, example include the vertebrae and hips bones.
Long bone anatomy
spongy bone
less dense than compact bone, located at the ends of long bones, contains red marrrow.
compact bone
The strength and shell of the Bone. surrounds shaft of the bone.
Diaphysis the long axis of the bone.
Epiphyses, ends of the long bone, filled with spongy bone and surrounded by compact bone.
Epiphyseal line, the growth plate that fuses with age.
medullary bone
A cavity inside long bone shaft where red and yellow marrow is stored.

Bone remodeling
Resorption
Osteoclasts break down matrix.
Bone deposit
New bone matrix is deposited by osteoblasts
Bone fracture repair
bony callus formation
fibro cartilaginous formation
Hematoma formation
Joints
condyloid
Condyloid is a biaxial joint, that allows 2 palnes of movement. Found in the metacarpal and phalanges.
saddle
A saddle joint is two interlocking bone that look like saddles, example can be found in the thumbs.
Ball and socket
Ball and socket allows for the most movement, it is multi-axial because it involves all three planes. Examples include the hips and shoulder.
pivot
Pivot joint looks like a ring around a cylinder that allows for rotation, examples include the vertebral that allows us to nod our head no.
hinge
The hinge joint is a uniaxial joint, it moves in one plane. examples can be found in the knees, and elbows.
Plane
Plane joint are found in the wrists and found in the ankle of the foot, plane joint also know as gliding joint slides it is muiltaxial.
differences between female skeleton
Differences in male and female skeleton are usually because of child birth. Women must have wider hips in order to fit a baby head through. Men have a longer hips and women have wider and heart shaped hips.
Movement of synovial joint
axial
uniaxial
one plane movement
Nonaxail
sliding movement only.
multiaxial
all three planes of movement.
biaxial
two plane movement
Gliding movement
gliding of the wrists
Rotation
lateral rotation, rotation away from the mid line.
Medial rotation towards the midline.
Angular movement
increase or decrease, flexion or extension, abduction, or abduction, circimduction.
Disorders
osteoporosis
A disorder tn which the rate at which bone resorption exceeds deposits. bone eats it self which declines bone mass.
Osteomalacia
Bones lose their minerals, this results in soft bones that are weak to force. Patient might feel pain well bearing weight.
paget's disease
A disorder where bones grow fast and develop poorly.
