Thyroid Gland Function:
Butterfly shaped anterior to trachea
Produce hormones that regulate: Metabolic rate, growth rate, and other body mechanisms
Myxedema Coma
May or may not be in comatose
PABCD treatment: Admit to hospital ASAP. Fatal if left untreated. I.V. Administration of thyroid hormone replacement.
Body is unable to compensate for thyroid deficiencies
Hyperthyroidism: Excess thyroid hormones in the blood.
Hypothyroidism: Deficient thyroid secretions
Thyroid Storm
Extreme hyperthyroid state
PABCD: Stabilization until hospitalized.
P: patient is comfortable
A/B/C: Airway, oxygen, monitor vitals
EMS: will admin IV fluids
Life threatening emergency
Symptoms
Dull-blank expression
Extreme fatigue
Facial & eyelid edema
Anorexia
Receding hairline
Brittle nails and hair
Intolerence to cold
Symptoms
Dry skin
Muscle aches and weakness
Lethargy
Constipation
Apathy
Menstrual disturbances
Hair loss
