Summary
Hemochromatosis is a medical condition triggered by an excess amount of iron absorbed from foods. The body is unable to get rid of iron as it builds up and causes damage.
Iron commonly builds up in the joints, pancreas, heart, or liver
Usually develops at 40-60 years old, after the iron has built up people start to notice symptoms.
Symptoms
Joint pain
Chronic Fatigue and decreased engery
Hairloss
abdominal pain
weight loss
arthritis
diabetes
Heart issues
liver disease
Diagnosis
Blood test to check iron levels in blood.
DNA test to check for mutations in the hemojuvelin and HFE genes.
Liver Biopsy the liver is the 1st organ for iron buildup.
Treatment
Therapeutic phlebotomy when blood is removed weekly to get rid of excess iron.
Chelation therapy with the use of defoxamine.
Change in diet to foods with low iron, limit vitamin C (which increases iron absorption, limit alcohol, and limit raw shell fish.
