Skeletal System Hiepsy Barrientos P.6
Bone remodeling:
Axial Skeleton:
Skull: frontal, Parietal, temporal, maxilla, mandible, zygomatic, nasal
Thoracic:sternum, ribs (scapula and clavicle)
Appendicular Skeleton
Upper limb:humerus, ulna, radius, carpal, metacarpal, phalanges, scapula, clavicle
Lower limb:femur, fibula, tibia, tarsal, Calcaneus, talus, metatarsal, phalanges, patella
Cervical - atlas - axis, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, Coccyx, Coxal bone
Types of bones (and examples):
Long bones:
Longer than they are wide
Limb bones
Short bones:
Cube-shaped bones (in wrist and ankle)
Sesamoid bones form within tendons (example: patella)
Vary in size and number in different individuals
Irregular bones:
Complicated shapes
Vertebrae and hip bones
Flat bones:
Thin, flat, slightly curved
Sternum, scapulae, ribs, most skull bones
Anatomy of the long bone:
Epiphyses: ends of long bones that consist of compact bone externally and spongy bone internally
– Articular cartilage covers articular (joint) surfaces
Between diaphysis and epiphysis is
epiphyseal line
– Remnant of childhood
epiphyseal plate
where bone growth occurs
Diaphysis: tubular shaft that forms long axis of bone
– Consists of compact bone surrounding central medullary cavity that is filled with yellow marrow in adults
