Matthew 4
The Temptation of Jesus
- And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
- But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Ref Deut [8:3]
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word[fn] that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Deuteronomy talks about why God led the Israelites into the desert for 40 years: to humble them and to test them to see if they would obey His commands.
God supplied food to the Israelites, they did not supply themselves.
God promises to bring His people "a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing."
8:15: "...who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock...
- Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
- “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
In Deut 8 it says: Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. God protected His people.
Ref Psalm 91:11-12
"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone."
Ironically, the very next verse says "You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot." - Psalm 91:13
"Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name." - Psalm 91:14
- Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Ref Deut 6:16
"You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah."
Ref Exodus 17
17:2: Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?”
17:7: And he called the name of the place Massah [meaning temptation] and Meribah [meaning quarrel], because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the LORD by saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”
-
- Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
Immediately after Exodus 17, the Israelites come to "the Mountain of God"/Mount Sinai to receive the 10 commandments. The Israelites commit adultery, worshipping the Golden calf.
- And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
-
Seems oddly blatant. He isn't even trying to use Scripture anymore, or trick Jesus into violating any commands; he is just outright inviting him to.
- Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
-
- “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”
-
Also in Deut 8:19: "And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish."
- Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
- And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
-
Deut 9:9
"When I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water."
This whole passage in M8 seems to be a call back to Moses and the Israelites. Jesus redeems BOTH parties in that story. He refuses to commit adultery like the Israelites with the calf and he refuses to
- Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
