Skeletal system
Functions (MMM Peanut Butter)
Protection
Protect vital organs
Contact sports e.g. during contact sports such as boxing, the cranium and ribs provide protection for:
Brain
Lungs
Liver
Mineral storage
Bones store minerals like calcium, which is important for growth and development
Contact sports e.g. during rugby, calcium would be needed as it increases bone density, this means that it would reduce their chances of injury
Movement (joints)
Joint - 2 or more bones meet and allow movement to take place
In football, joints are vital as they allow you to run and create space by dribbling the ball with the plantar flexion of the ankles
Muscle attachment
Bones provide a surface for muscles to attach to
The bicep muscles attaches to the radius and ulna in the forearm, allowing the elbow to flex
Blood cell production
Produced in bone marrow
Red blood cells provide oxygen to working muscles
White blood cells fight of infection
Platelets clot the blood (Ben Wells - Fakelets)
Classifications
Long
Longer than they are wide
Key part in leverage and movement
Femur
Short
Wider than they are longer
Designed for weight bearing
Tarsals/carpals
Flat
Thin, plate bones that act like a shell
provide protection and a large surface area for muscles to attach to
Cranium
Irregular
Unusual shaped bones for a unique purpose
Provide protection and large surface area for muscles to attach to
Vertebrae
