Unit 45;Typical Materials
Metals
Aluminium
Properties:
It is very good electrical and thermal conductor
Aluminum is very good at resisting corrosion
It is easily formed and machined which is why it is most commonly used metal.
Additive Manufacturing
DMLS
Titanium
Properties:
Titanium has a very high corrosion resistance
It is also able to withstand temperatures up to 1660*c
Titanium has a very low electrical conductivity
Additive Manufacturing:
SLM
Steel
Properties:
Steel is resistant to corrosion
It also has very high tensile strength which means is not easy to break
It is lighter in weight compared to some other metals
Additive Manufacturing:
DMLS
Gold
Properties:
Gold is ductile so it can be drawn into a very thin line
Its melting point is very high and can handle heat up to 1064*
C
Gold is very malleable so it can be flattened very thin
Additive Manufacturing
: DMLS
Silver
Properties:
Silver has a melting point of 960*c
It is a very malleable material so it can be drawn into wires.
It has a strong anti-bacterial properties and is used in the medical industry
Additive Manufacturing :
DMLS
Polymers
ABS Plastic
Properties:
ABS has a low melting point so it is mainly used for 3D printing and injection moulding.
It is also very resistant to physical impacts and corrosion.
ABS plastic also has a high tensile strength
Additive Manufacturing:
FDM
polylactic acid
Properties:
PLA has a melting point of 150*c
It has a density of 1.210g cm3
PLA is also biodegradable and recyclable making it better for the environment.
Additive Manufacturing:
FFF
Polyimides
Properties
Polyimides have a melting point around 300*c.
It has a high abrasion resistance so it can resist more wear from machines.
Polyimides keep its stiffness level at high temperatures.
Additive Manufacturing:
FDM
Composites
Glass fillers within polymers
Properties:
Have a high resistance to temperatures so therefore have a high melting point.
They increase the tensile strength in the polymers.
They can also change the color on the end product
Additive Manufacturing:
FDM
Cermets
Properties:
Cermets have a high melting point and have a high resistance to temperature.
They are also very tough and are hard to break.
Cemets also have good corrosion to resistance.
Additive Manufacturing:
SLM
Carbon Fibre
Properties:
Carbon fibre is lightweight so it is easy to transport and wear.
It has good electrical conductivity and does not expand using heat.
It also is good at dampening vibrations and is tough.
Additive Manufacturing:
LCC
Ceramic Resin
Properties:
Has a good electrical insulation.
Has a very low cost and low toxicity.
Epoxy resin also has a chemical resistannce.
Additive Manufacturing:
SLA
