Applications of Specific Heat Capacity ~HimirtaaJayaramu
TRADITIONAL HOUSES
Wood has high specific capacity. Heats up slowly. Suitable to be used to build houses in warm weather regions. In cold region, wood acts as good insulator to reduce heat from inside the house from escaping outside.
COOKING UTENSILS
Woks are made of material with low specific heat capacity. It can heat up easily, food can cook faster. Clay pot is made of material with high specific heat capacity. Food stays warm longer inside clay pot . Body of pot is made of materials with low specific heat capacity such as aluminum so that it can heat up quickly and cook food faster. Handle of pot is made of materials with high specific heat capacity such as plastic so that it can heat up slowly and can be handled safely.
CAR RADIATOR SYSTEM
Heat is produced by car engine, need to be cooled down. Water is pumped into engine block, will absorb large amount of heat due to its high specific heat capacity. Hot water is then cooled through cooling fin by the cold air sucked from outside.
CONSTRUCTION OF GREEN BUILDING
Roof is fitted with insulators made of Styrofoam. High specific heat capacity of the material reduce the increase of temperature inside the building.
LAND BREEZE
At night, sea water cools down slower than land. Warm air above the sea rises. Cooler air flows from land to sea.
SEA BREEZE
During the day, land heat up faster than sea water ( c land < c sea ). Warm air above land rises. Cooler air flows from sea to land.
OUTER LAYER OF SPACE CAPSULES
Space capsules entering the Earth atmosphere has high air resistance, causing its temperature to increase. Outer layer of space capsule is made of material with very high specific heat capacity and melting point.
