Epitaxis: Nose bleed
Symptoms:
Posterior nasal bleeds tend to drain in the mouth resulting in gagging
Bleeding of nasal cavity
Cause:
Digital manipulation
Acute bleeding: May occur during a dental procedure, following extraction or due to an accident in the office.
Prevention
Avoid blowing your nose too forcefully. Sneeze through an open mouth. Always sneeze into tissue or into the bend of your arm. Avoid putting anything solid into your nose., including fingers.
Post extraction in dental office
PABCD:
A/B/C: Maintain open airway and monitor vitals
D: May need suction to remove blood and clear airway.
P: Upright, head tilted forward
Apply direct pressure for 15-20 minutes, have patient breathe through mouth. Apply ice pack.
Broken Instrument Tip
Symptoms: Patient may state that they will feel something lodged between their teeth or in their gingival tissue.
Treatment:
Isolate area with cotton or gauze.
Maintain lip/cheek retraction.
Terminate procedure.
Ask patient to not move or swallow.
Attempt to locate piece.
Dry area and lightly probe or palpate last area you were working
If located: remove with curet or cotton tip pliers.
If not located: Take PA of area
Inform patient.
Still unable to retrieve: Treat as aspirated or ingested foreign object.
Signs: Tip will be missing from the end of the instrument upon removal from the patients oral cavity.
