John H. L. Wilson Jr
- John was a Black DeafDisabled man.
- John’s wrongful conviction story was the impetus for the creation of HEARD (Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of Deaf Communities).
- John was sentenced to life in prison for a crime he always maintained he did not commit (Lewis, 2018). He spent 24 years, 5 months, and 14 days in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, where he experienced abuse, neglect, and extreme isolation for the entirety of his time behind bars.
- HEARD advocates fought for his freedom for 12 years. He was finally able to return home on March 6, 2019.
- John died on September 6, 2019.
Talila “TL” Lewis
- Talila Lewis is a Black Dis-abled Queer Genderfluid hearing community lawyer who cofounded HEARD (Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of Deaf Communities)
- TL serves as the volunteer Director for HEARD
- HEARD created the only national database of deaf/disabled incarcerated people and of police violence against deaf/disabled people.
- HEARD is a national volunteer-dependent nonprofit organization, serving Deaf and Disabled people affected by mass incarceration and injustice in the U.S. criminal legal system.

Drago Rentería
- Drago is a Deaf disabled Chicano transgender man and long-time LGBTQ/social justice activist, leader, and educator.
- Drago is also notably one of the first out Deaf transgender people in the United States and frequently educates on transgender issues to audiences nationwide.
- Drago served as Executive Director of Deaf Queer Resource Center, a national organization for Deaf LGBTQ communities he founded and has run since 1995.
- Drago has devoted much of his life toward making the world a better place for marginalized LGBTQ communities.
