For the first time, Britain had amassed a large
army and its industries had supplied great amounts of heavy artillery.
The only successes on the first day of the Battle of the Somme were the diversionary
attacks to the south.
Enemy troops in these areas had not been forewarned by heavy bombardment, so the generals maintained the element of surprise and gained their objectives.
