hurricanes

katrina

a lot start in the atlantic near north west africa

they draw there energy from the sea and can only form when the ocean beneath is around 26 degrees give or take one

the much bigger major storm form when the ocean is at around 28 degrees c

they need developing waves patterns or thunder storms which are not found in the areas under high pressure also earths rotation can not

they form around 8 to 20 degrees north of the equator

where eastley trade winds converge and there is lots of moisture meing that it is perfect for the forming of them

as the air rises from the ocean evaporating the water releasing more latent energy it adds more more and more buoyancy to it. This makes more and more violent thunder clouds since the trade winds arrive curved this is how the storm ends up spinning the clouds there and once the winds reach 74 mph it counts as a class 1 hurricane.

hurricanes are measured in classes 1 to 5 though in all hurricanes there is the eye of the storm a calm slot where there is no winds or rain it's the middle of the storm and outside that is the worst part of the storm the eye wall. in the eye wall winds can exceed 155 mph in a class 5 hurricane

irma

off the coast where it first hit the water levels rose by 2m in just 90 minuets

key west was where irma hit first

places that should have been sturdy enough just weren't

after key west it was fort myers

fog around skyscrapers and roads being flooded

streets were deserted

when it got to big cities into florida it had lost a bit of power however it still packed 135 mph winds near the eye

irmaa back off into a class 1 but them suddenly gained power at started throwing around 170 mph winds

british virgin islands there were almost no homes left un damaged a lot were completely demolished

power lines and water went down

hospital was heavily damaged

the raf also helped by getting medical equipment and heavy lifting gear

120 prisoners escaped so police officers were sent there to help with keeping law and order
