Opening
In Social Studies we have been talking about attacks on the 13 colonies. How did those attacks effect the people in the colonies? What judgement could you make about how the attack will effect the people in this book?

How can you explain the impact the attack had on the people attack on St. Augustine had on the people who lived there?
Contrast how Isabel first felt about the attack to how she felt at the end of the attack. Can you explain how her feelings changed?

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim assessment is given periodically throughout the year and provides little to no feedback to students. It is a more formal style of assessment.
STAAR: students will take the Texas standardized test at the end of the year to assess their skills/knowledge.
iStation: students will take a computerized assessment periodically to check for achievement in reading and language arts.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments assess learning at the end of a large chunk of learning (unit). These assessments are usually high stakes with a high point value.
District Assessment: students will take periodic testing every 9 nine weeks in the four subject areas to test skills/knowledge at the end of the nine weeks units.
Historical figure research project: at the end of a unit in Social Studies, students will complete a research project over one of the historical figures covered in the unit. Students will follow a given rubric.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require students to engage in a task rather than selecting an answer from pre-made questions.
Student portfolio: students will curate a portfolio of completed work that has been created by the student through technology or illustrations/writing.
Readers Theater: after engaging in a drama lesson, students will put together their own "production" of a class story. Students can create characters, scenes, etc. to retell a story and demonstrate comprehension.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment where teachers can evaluate a students' strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction. It is given at the beginning of a course.
Dolch word lists: students will read from a list of words to demonstrate understanding of word knowledge, phonological awareness, and word parts.
Comprehension checks: after reading a passage, students will answer a list of comprehension questions to demonstrate understanding of literal, inferential, analysis, application, etc. knowledge.
Formative
Definition: Formative is the process of gathering evidence of student learning. Feedback is provided and the assessments can be used to adjust instruction strategies to enhance achievement. Through this, learners can change behaviors.
Concept Map: students will create a map over a specific topic to demonstrate their learning and make connections between lesson ideas.
Exit Ticket: students will answer a question or complete a quick activity at the end of the lesson to summarize learning.
