Identifying Legitimate Websites :red_flag:
Who is responsible for verifying that information on the internet is correct and accurate?
Because anyone can post anything on the web, the responsibility is on the user to verify the information and the website.
Definitions
HTTPS:
The website uses the secure version of HTTP and encrypts the data (sends it in code) to prevent unauthorized access.
Encryption:
is just a way of scrambling the data so that if it was stolen by hackers, they would not be able to read the data and get your personal information.
In order to unscramble the data, the sender and receiver must be authorized by the server and provided with the key to unlock the data.
When you see the locked padlock icon or see the site uses https://, you know that the information you send to the server will be encrypted.
A domain name:
The name of the site.
Many times domain names are the name of the company, school, or government agency you are looking for.
Extensions:
Common extensions are .com, .net, .edu or .gov.
The domain name is followed by an extension that identifies the type of website that the domain is registered as.
