Where did these misconceptions come from?
The representation of Islam in media where the Muslims are often portrayed as villainous terrorists and oppressed.
The lack of understanding or knowledge on Islam as a religion, and only absorbing what the media told them.
After the 9/11 incident, the media used fear mongering tactic to demonise Islam and associated the muslim community as a group terrorists.
Examples of misconception
Islam oppressed women, for e.g assuming their hijabs as a sign of oppressions.
That all Muslims comes from the East
All Muslim are terrorists due to 9.11 incident
Islam is a backward religion with savage practices and rituals. Examples such as cutting off limbs or stoning to death as punishments.
Islam encourages violence and war, usual argument for this is that the Quran emphasised killing.
All Muslims have to dress or look a certain way: scarves and niqabs for women and long beards for men.
Muslims do not believe in Jesus.
All Muslim men marry 4 wives
If Muslim men die in Jihad, most likely through suicide bombing, they get 27 virgins in heaven
How to improve this problem
Try to learn about Islam and understand Islam not from the media's perspective
Proper representation of Muslims in Western media, breaking stereotypes of terrorism or savagery of Muslims
Bringing genuine Muslims who live genuine Muslim lives on board for media portrayals rather than writing characters based off of Western assumptions
Inter-faith dialogue to bridge gap between different religions to help each other understand one another better
